ArkHive 1.0 BETA

ArkHive is a desktop backup utility built around clear backup sets, predictable incremental file protection, integrity tracking, and practical reporting. It is designed to make routine backups visible, understandable, and manageable instead of burying them behind a black box.

BETA NOTICE: ArkHive 1.0 BETA does not include scheduled backups. The interface and backup engine are ready for normal manual backup operations, but automatic scheduled execution is not part of this BETA package.

What ArkHive Is

ArkHive is a desktop data backup utility for organizing one or more source locations into named backup sets and protecting those files at a destination you control. The application is aimed at straightforward local and attached-storage workflows where you want to know what is being protected, where it is going, and what changed since the previous run.

Instead of treating a backup as a single opaque archive, ArkHive keeps the process understandable. Sources remain identifiable, file state can be tracked, backup sets can be reviewed independently, and exported records provide a useful trail of what the application knows about your data.

How the Backup Workflow Works

  1. Create a backup set. Give the set a useful name and choose the destination that will hold its protected data.
  2. Add source folders. Each source is tracked as part of that set so you can see exactly what the backup job includes.
  3. Scan the sources. ArkHive examines the files available in each source and updates its knowledge of the current data set.
  4. Run the backup. The application determines what needs to be copied and performs the backup against the configured destination.
  5. Review status and reports. Use the interface and exported records to confirm what was detected, processed, and protected.

This model makes ArkHive particularly useful for development folders, document collections, project archives, media libraries, and other directory-based data that changes over time.

Incremental Backup Behavior

Incremental backup is the heart of ArkHive's day-to-day workflow. Once a set has been scanned and backed up, subsequent runs can concentrate on the files that require attention. This keeps repeated backup runs practical for working directories that may contain thousands of files while only a fraction of them change between sessions.

ArkHive's file records are intended to answer a simple but important question: what changed since the last protected state? File size, modification information, integrity data, status, last-seen information, and backup timestamps give the application enough context to make that process visible rather than mysterious.

Destinations and Data Control

ArkHive is built around destinations you choose. That can include another local disk, mounted storage, external media, or another filesystem location available to the operating system. The important part is that the destination is explicit and belongs to the backup set.

Before running an important backup, confirm that the destination is mounted, writable, and has sufficient free space. A backup tool can protect data only when the target storage is actually available.

Reports, Manifests, and Configuration Exports

ArkHive can produce exported records that document the state of a backup set and the data known to the application. These exports are useful for reviewing a backup outside the interface, keeping operational records, or examining the contents of a set without manually traversing every source folder.

Machine-readable exports can also serve as a durable snapshot of backup configuration and file state. Human-readable reports provide the companion view for ordinary review and documentation.

Scheduled Backups in This BETA

Scheduled backups are not included in ArkHive 1.0 BETA. Any scheduling controls, documentation references, or future-facing interface elements should not be interpreted as an active automatic backup service in this release.

Backups in this BETA should be initiated manually from the application or through whatever manual workflow is provided with the package. This keeps the first public BETA focused on backup-set behavior, scanning, incremental protection, record keeping, and reporting before unattended scheduling becomes part of the supported release path.

Recommended BETA Workflow

  • Begin with a small, non-critical test folder and a dedicated backup destination.
  • Create one clearly named backup set and verify the source and destination paths before running it.
  • Perform an initial scan and backup, then modify or add a few test files.
  • Run the backup again and confirm that the incremental behavior matches expectations.
  • Review exported reports or manifests so you understand exactly what ArkHive records.
  • Keep at least one independent backup of irreplaceable data while evaluating BETA software.

Good Backup Practice

ArkHive is a backup tool, not a substitute for backup discipline. Important files should never exist in only one place, and a single destination should not be treated as invulnerable. Hardware fails. Filesystems become corrupted. External drives get disconnected at exactly the wrong moment because apparently storage devices enjoy dramatic timing.

For valuable data, maintain multiple copies and periodically verify that restored files are actually usable. ArkHive can help organize and automate the mechanics of protection, but the strongest backup strategy still includes separation between working data and at least one independent copy.
